CHAPER TWO- JOHN VEALE I
CHAPTER TWO
DESCENDANTS OF JOHN VEALE SENIOR:
+ 1. JOHN VEALE I (MORRIS I 1), b. circa 1666 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, d. circa 1718 he m. DELIVERANCE TAYLOR she b. circa 1668 and d. after 1718. She the daughter of JOSEPH TAYLOR
More about DELIVERANCE TAYLOR:

“Deliverance was the daughter of JOSEPH TAYLOR, she remarried after the demise of JOHN VEALE I”. THANKS ED for the help (RLV)
More about JOHN VEALE I:
We know from the Will of Morris VEALE I, probated July 29, 1696, written October 03, 1695. He Morris Veale writes: “Secondly, I give and bequeath land and plantation I now live upon to be equally divided between my three sons, MORRIS, JOHN & WILLIAM to be possessed by them when they reach the age of 21 years unless my wife happens to remarry, then it is my will that my said sons shall be the age of 16 years”. The Court Records in the work on Morris VEALE I, shows that Dorothy was still named Dorothy VEALE after May 1715. Some writers speculate that she did in fact remarry, but no positive proof has been found
Notes on paragraph one above:
1). At the time of arrival of Morris Veale & Dorothy in Westmoreland County, Virginia, about 1645, land patents were not in effect until around 1700. The land was only patented when Dorothy was settling the Estate of her husband. Dorothy did gain patents for her three sons just after May of 1715 (RLV)
2). The above would indicate that on October 03, 1695, the date that Morris Veale wrote his Will, with three sons under 16 years of age, and that they all three were over 21 years old in 1715. Without further evidence it ids quite difficult to establish the exact date of birth from this source. (RLV)
3). To calculate the date of birth of John Veale I, one has to take an overall look at the family structure. Due to the fact that John Veale I’s son Bond Veale had married and had a son born in 1707. Age wise John had to be born just after the marriage of Morris to Dorothy, say one year, making the date of birth as 1666. (RLV)
4). There is an indication that the Veale/Veal of early Virginia were of Scot-Irish ancestry.
A). The city by the name of HADDINGTON. SCOTLAND comes from THE CONCORDANCE OF HADDINGTON. SCOTLAND. To nutshell the Concordance that was found and released by Nell Zipfel (Veal). This document is placed into the Nathan Veal I writing that is being included into this writing. In short it relates that in according to the Concordance written into the Old and New Testaments of Haddington, Scotland, by the parish minister, that Nathan Veal I’s ancestry came from Haddington, Scotland are of Scot-Irish background and came to the Colonies via England. This too has a high quality of merits. (RLV)
Note: At this time I will point out that I have lost my Bold lockout and will continue with a total Bold writing (RLV)
5). From Westmoreland County, Virginia, Montross Courthouse as found by Nell and George Zipfel in their many journeys found the following: “John Veale died 1718 his will dated November 21, 1717. Presented to Court on February 25, 1718. Sons JOHN II, MORRIS, and daughter SUSAN bequeathed lands in Stafford County, Virginia. Both JOHN II & MORRIS died without issue and BOND the son who had already left home inherited:.(Prince William County, Virginia Deeds Book, page 252, line 110 show the date of Will to be November 21, 1718)
6). From William & Mary quarterly, and the Veale Heritage by the late Carl W. Veale I shows: “John Veale Sr. Will filed November 21, 1718 in Westmoreland County, Virginia states Land to sons John & Morris, daughter Susan one mare, Wife Deliverance and MY THREE SONS, Morris. Executors: Brothers Humphrey POPE & Caucry VAUGHN
7). 1707, John Veale, Stafford County, Virginia. John VEALE & Humphrey POPE of Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia in March 1707, deed granted to Francis REDMAN
8). 1723, John VEALE, Stafford County, Virginia, quit rent. This would be John Veale II as John I died in 1718.
9). From Ralph C. Veale’s message dated January 03, 1999
“John’s wife Deliverance and his children were John Jr., Morris, Bond & Susan. He bequeathed his land in Stafford County, Virginia to John Jr. and Morris. Both died without heirs. It appears that John died young even for this period of time, nd his children, other than Bond must have died even younger, and maybe his wife too, as Bond inherited his land sometime around 1735. So this leaves Bond as a potential link connection to our family of James Carr Veale I and onwards to Morris & Dorothy.
Note: To prove this being true or untrue, there is a book titled: “A beginning at White Oak” that is written on Bond’s son JOHN VEALE. I’ve been unable to find a copy of this writing at all. My father, Mardenna Hunter and Lucille Bernice Hewitt, all now deceased, hired a professional genealogist from Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. It too was his conclusion that Bond VEALE could well be the father of our family James Carr Veale I. However, as one studied the number of Veales in and around this area in 1763 that may have been the father of our James; a conclusion without facts or proof is not strong enough to make a positive finding (RLV)
10). To better understand the conflicting writings in the Will of John VEALE I, I’ve included the following message, dated December 31, 1998 from Rick Saunders of Salt Lake City, Utah
Subject: VEALE and dealing with the Heir-at-Law Subject:
A). Prince William County, Virginia, Deeds Book B, pages 252-255 Bond VEALE to Richard Blackburn states that the Will of John VEALE dated November 21, 1817 bequeathed his land to be equally divided between his sons John & Morris, and if they both die without heirs, then next heir-at-law,.
B). Prince William County, Virginia, Deeds Book I, pages 110-115. Henry ELLEY, and Esther his wife, to William BUTLER, land originally taken up by William HARRISON, and later re-granted to said HARRISON and William BUTLER and Lewis MARKHAM sold his share to Humphrey POPE, John VEALE II and Morris VEALE, it was equally divided between the both of them who both dying without heirs it fell into the hands of Bond VEALE being the heir-at-law, who sold it to Henry ELLEY.
From the above documents we know that Bond VEALE was a brother to John VEALE II and Morris VEALE, and therefore all sons of John VEALE I of the 1718 Will.
Subject: VEALE and dealing with heir-at-law
The words “heir-at-law” is a legal term. Under primogeniture that was used in Virginia at this time, there was a strict order of succession in who was “heir-at-law”.
When a man died, if he left a Will the widow received a dower equal to 1/3rd for her lifetime. The remaining 2/3rds went to the “heir-at-law”, unless specified differently in the Will. Upon the death of the mother, the “heir-at-law” her share equal to 1/3rd portion. In cases of intestacy, the “heir-at-law” would receive all the properties of the Estate. In the general the males would inherit before the females, and if two males of equal in degree. The elder would inherit. To summarize whom is a “heir-at-law”:
1). The eldest son.
2). The eldest son was deceased, then the “heir-at-law”. (in other words, eldest grandson)
3). If deceased was unmarried then to the eldest son.
4). If the deceased was married but childless, the widow received the lad for her lifetime, but was to petition and pay for a new patent as the property she wished to bequeath it.
Rules change when it descends to a female as “heir-at-law”. Since Book I, page 110 stated that Bond VEALE was a brother to John & Morris, then #3 would apply making Bond VEALE as “heir-at-law”. When either John or Morris died (which ever died first) then the other would be his “heir-at-law, as elder brother.
Point of interest in Rick Saunders message of September 26, 1998, Rick stated the following: “I also want to point out John and Morris, sons of John VEALE I were deceased with no heirs not only before 1748, but before 1736 when Bond VEALE sold the land to Henry ELLEY”. Perhaps around 1732 to 1733.

2. BOND VEALE (MORRIS I 1), b. before 1718 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, d. after 1763 in Craven County, South Carolina, he m. 1st ELIZABETH GOSLING in Amherst County, Virginia, and m. 2nd CATHERIN (?)
1). On the descendants of Bond Veale it has been pointed out to me by two other researchers and one Web Master, that we do have a lack of solid evidence to justify many of these items. For instance:
2). The marriage to ELIZABETH GOSLING there are no marriage records what-so-ever to insure that they were ever married.
3). As for the 2nd wife, CATHERIN, there is only a notation referring to his Will that he may have had a 2nd wife in South Carolina. I’ve been unable to find this will at
all.
4). The major problem happens within the VEALE-POINDEXTER connections, where we have two writers and one Web Master that are not on the same page at all. Nor can I get them to take a good look into each-others work.
5). I’ve put down just what has been found that is provable, and my own comments and probabilities.
More about BOND VEALE:
1). Van A. Stilley, relates from his study of Wills that his date of birth was before 1718 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, d. after 1763 in Craven County, South Carolina. He married ELIZABETH, they had one son JOHN. Van also indicated that Bond was in South Carolina before 1758.
2). From the Paul Turley Genealogy: In 1738, BOND VEALE made a sub-lease in Prince William County Virginia from THOMAS PENSON ad his wife SUSAN PENSON (VEALE), the daughter of MORRIS VEALE II & SARAH. The original lease of Thomas PENSON was for 300 acres, BOND leased 150 acres.

Note: This CD is real and the listing is verified, however, due to the fact that most of the work on this CD is strictly a copy of an unnamed person or source which leaves one no documentary place to confirm the record,
9). Bond VEALE, 1738, lease, Prince William County, Virginia, Paul Turley leased 150 acres to Bond VEALE on Jonnymore Run in the line of James & William WAUGH, to Bull Run to the mouth of Jonnymore and up to PENSON

18). Bond VEALE, November 06, 1766, land, Fairfax County, Virginia, Northern Neck Grants. 1742-1754. Thomas ELLZEY of said County, 244 acres. Surveyor: John HOUGH, adjacent to COL. CARTER on Polick, W. CRTIIEN’s Old Rolling Road, S. LITTLEJOHN, T. RILEY now said CARTER’S, William ELLZEY, Bond VEALE, and G. SIMPSON
19). Bond VEALE, 1744, land adjustments, Prince William County, and Fairfax County, Virginia is listed for several adjustments.
Note: It appears that Bond VEALE did leave Virginia to what is indicated to be Carven County, North Carolina around 1767. The later documents shows that Bond VEALE did leave his Will with William ELLZEY, who is the father of ELIZABETH ELLZEY, she m. THOMAS VEALE the son of William VEALE I & Lydia TURLEY. From all indications, William ELLZEY had moved on the property that was left with him as a part of he Estate of John VEALE I. John VEALE, the son of Bond VEALE, in-turn left the property to his son Elijah VEALE, legal actions did occur over this property.
The legal Action as found in the Thomas Bauch Library in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia:
“George Veale, one of the legal representatives of Elijah VEALE, the late of Hyde County, North Carolina who was selling 1/6th interest in the land of Prince William County, Virginia to George SALCUM of Alexandra. This narrative related to the following tale: Bond VEALE, having removed to North Carolina devised the land to his son John VEALE, who devised it to his son Elijah VEALE. When Elijah VEALE came from South Carolina, he found the land occupied by ELLZEY who refused to give it up. This is believed to be Thomas ELLZEY, who was known to own the land adjoining Bond VEALE”.
My notes:
It was actually William ELLZEY who held the land for Bond VEALE’S son John VEALE. William ELLZEY left this land to his son Thomas ELLZEY. To paraphrase what happened: It was Elijah VEALE who petitioned or sued ELLZEY for the land though his son and Attorney, George VEALE. Elijah VEALE died a short time later, and George Veale continued the suit on the behalf of Elijah VEALE’S children: George VEALE, the Attorney: SARAH, ELIZABETH, JOHN, THOMAS VEALE and one other not named or listed
Now to why Bond VEALE left his home, property, etc. in such a hurry:
It is my personal belief, from the above records, that he, Bond VEALE was in deep trouble in some of his land dealings, and did leave around 1766, the last known date of him being in Virginia. And he did leave his Will and affairs in the hands of William ELLZEY for his, Bond VEALE’S son JOHN VEALE.
In September and October 1998, Frederick Z. Saunders, a professional genealogist and myself had a rapid fire discussion of 8 long messages. Rick writes: “I had previously asked if I had asked if Bond VEALE had a son JOHN. I have proof of this.
1). First John Veale appears as a witness to a deed on March 19, 1732 in Prince William County, Virginia in PW County Book B, pages 83-85. I believe this to be the John VEALE. This is in error as the John VEALE listed is John VEALE II, the son of John VEALE I & Deliverance TAYLOR
2). John VEALE II was deceased by March 19, 1732 in Prince William County, Virginia. He sold land to Richard BLACKBURN in Hamilton Parish. 130 acres, a part of 275 acres given to him by John VEAL I, his father in his Will dated November 21, 1718, to his sons John II & Morris VEALE, and if both should die without heirs, then it goes to the heirs-at-law. The land descended to Bond VEALE (Book B, pages 252-255). Bond VEALE sold in 1736, 150 acres to Henry ELLZEY, who then sold it to William BUTLER in 1749 (Book L, pages 110-115) In this Deed it was stated that Bond VEALE was a brother to Morris & John VEALE II.
3). There is no mention of John Veale in Prince William County, after this date. John VEALE on February 26, 1749, John GRAHAM of Fairfax County, Virginia sold to Bond VEALE of the same County, 250 acres in Prince William County, Virginia for during the life of Bond VEALE and Eliza (Elizabeth) and his son John and the longest survivor of them (P. W. Deed Book M, pages 166-168
4). The above would be John Veale named in the 1750 Will of Morris VEALE II if the records shows that John VEALE left the Colony at the same time of Bond VEALE. Yes, this John VEALE would be the son of Morris VEALE II, who did witness the Will of Morris VEALE II.
5). In the pervious sent item, William VEALE called JOHN a 2nd cousin. They were cousins once removed. If you ask any non-genealogist what is the relationship of of a child, their 1st cousin would be the 2nd cousin.
NOTE: To clear the air just a bit. In the early era of this family the name John is very well used. First of all, Morris VEALE I & Dorothy did have a son named JOHN, he being the one I call John VEALE I who married Deliverance TAYLOR, they had four children: BOND, JOHN II, MORRIS & SUSAN. Bond VEALE who married Eliza also had a son named John VEALE. Then Morris VEALE I & DOROTHY had a son named John VEALE who removed to Kentucky and had a large family. This John trend carries downward even to this date. Confusing to say the least, however, I will identify each one of the John’s as we continue. (RLV)
Child of BOND VEALE & ELIZA is:
+ 6. i. JOHN VEALE
POSSIBLE CHILDREN:
+ 7. ii. SARA SARAH BOND VEALE
Notes for CINAR & ALLEN VEALE:
Cinar and Allen shows up in the Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun and
Princess Anne Counties of Virginia, no Wills or other documents to
Connect them to the Colony.
GENERATION THREE*************************************************
6. JOHN VEALE (BOND 3, JOHN I 2, MORRIS I 1), b. circa 1705 in Fairfax County, Virginia, d. unknown, m. unknown
Notes for JOHN VEALE:
From the listings above we know that John VEALE left Virginia about the same time as Bond VEALE, his father. They are both known to have been in Craven County, North Carolina. When leaving Virginia Bond VEALE left his Will in the hands of William ELLZEY to hold for his son John VEALE. John VEALE in turn left in his Will (not found yet) to his son Elijah or Eligah VEALE. There is a book titled “A beginning at White Oak” of which I’ve not been able to locate as of yet.
NOTE #2:
DUE TO THE FACT THERE IS A MAJOR CONFLICT IN THE WRITINGS OF TWO MEN WHO ARE RESEARCHERS INTO THE VEALE-POINDEXTER FAMILIES, AND A WEB MASTER THAT HAS VARIOUS DIFFERENCES ON THE SUBJECT. I’M GOING TO USE THE COPYRIGHTED VERSION SUBMITTED BY JEMES HOWE IN HIS BOOK TITLED: GENERATIONS, “A HISTORY OF THE HOWE & NEVILLE FAMILIES: (RLV)
Child of JOHN VEALE & WIFE UNKNOWN is:
+ 10. i. ELIJAH or ELIGAH VEALE
2nd member of Bond Veale & Unknown
7. SARAH “SARA” BOND VEALE (BOND 3, JOHN I 2, MORRIS I 1), b. circa 1706 in Fairfield County, Virginia, d. 1765 in Louisa County, Virginia she m. THOMAS POINDEXTER III, the son of THOMAS POINDEXTER II & SARAH CRAWFORD. He, THOMAS POINDEXTER III was b. 1705 in New Kent County, Virginia, d. after 1770 in Louisa County, Virginia
NOTE: HEREIN LAYS THE MAJOR PROBLEM. “NO WHERE IS THERE ANY RECORDS LISTED TO PROVE SHE IS OR WAS THE CHILD OF BOND VEALE & ELIZA”. THIS IS A TRUE STATEMENT (RLV)
Notes for SARAH “SARA” VEALE & THOMAS POINDEXTER III:
Jim Howe has a great write-up in his copyrighted version of GENERATIONS “A History of Howe and Neville Families”, pages 51-52, lists SARAH BOND VILLE (VEALE). It is not my intentions or plans to use another persons researching tool, except to express that this is a real family, that in spite of differing opinions on the same subject and a lot of controversy. At this time I will briefly explore the many spellings of this surname. In documents of both here and the United Kingdom there are at least 67 different spellings of this surname often as many as 3 or 4 in the same document or writing, this is to include Court Orders. If it be proven that the surname was VILLE as listed above, it would indicate that Sarah Bond VILLE would be of the de VIELLIE family of Denmark, France and England, at this stage this family may be of Norman ancestry. Not proven either way as of yet. (RLV)
The only reason I’m placing this into the Northern Neck of Virginia Veale’s writing comes from the fact I did not have the heart to tell a very elderly Lady who is in poor health and just lost her husband and the web master that I have the facts. In the Thomas Brauch Library in Leesburg, Loudoun, Virginia is a paper titled: “The Illegimates of Loudoun County. Virginia (this is a polite way to list the title}. Prior I had a conversation with Jimmy Veal of Valdosta, Georgia, where he had indicated that Carnaby Veal had cohabited with another mans wife. At this time I believed this to be Bond Veale and not Carnaby Veal. This is the only writing that has been found placing her name as SARAH “SARA” BOND VILLE.
HERE IS THE SKINNY:
SALLY REID’S sister SARAH REID cohabits with BOND Le VILLE out of wedlock, the child was named SARAH “SARA” BOND VILLE. SALLY REID removed to Ohio leaving the child SARAH VILLE to be raised by SARAH REID, her sister. Her sister, SARAH REID and her husband, {SIR} JAMES WAUGH raised SARAH VILLE to maturity. The WAUGH’S were keepers of the land leases for the Crown of England, and collectors of fees and taxes in the Northern Neck of Virginia.
At to the fact that BOND VEALE ever married is not proven to this date, we do know he had at least two children, that is, JOHN & SARAH (RLV)
NOTE: AT THIS TIME I’M INCLUDING WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS FAMILY, HOPING THAT SOMEONE CAN STRAIGHTEN OUT THIS CONTROVERSY CORRECTLY (RLV)
Children of SARAH VEALE & THOMAS POINDEXTER III are:
11. i. WILLIAM POINDEXTER, b. circa 1720 in Hanover County, Virginia
12.
ii. FRANCIS POINDEXTER, b. circa 1731 in Hanover County, Virginia
+ 13. iii. THOMAS POINDEXTER IV
14. iv. BOND VEALE POINDEXTER, b. circa 1735

More about ELIJAH or ELIGAH VEALE:
In Deed Book J2, page 229, dated June 16, 1809 in Fairfax County, Virginia, this deed is specific in naming the children of Elijah. The children: GEORGE, SARAH, ELIZABETH, JOHN, THOMAS & ELIPATHY VEALE. From the legal action that occurred over this Estate it appears that Elijah returned to Virginia to claim the land left him by his father, John VEALE, who in-turn had it left to him by his father, Bond VEALE. Upon arrival, Elijah found Thomas ELLZEY living on the land and refused to give it up claiming it was his as an inheritance from his father, William ELLZEY. Elijah died shortly afterwards and his son George VEALE, the attorney handled the case. The judgment went to the children except 1/6th it went to GEORGE SALCOM, who had purchased it from Elijah VEALE. It was Thomas ELLZEY’S father who Bond VEALE left to oversee this land.
Beth Mitchell has a published book titled: “The Beginning at White Oak: which is written about ELIJAH VEALE. This is the one that I’d like to find.
