END OF INSERT ON POPE FAMILY: BACK TO THE VEALE CONNECTION

More about AMY VEALE & HUMPHREY POPE II:

1). KATHLEEN MUCH’S line is HUMPHREY POPE I & ELIZABETH HAWKINS

2). JOHN KENT’S line is from the POPE-MUSE (MEWES)

3). From William & Mary’s quarterly. Virginia Historical Index, Volume II, W-Z lists AMY VEALE 13W(1)281 as her land in Westmoreland County, Virginia

4). W. A. Crozier, Westmoreland County Virginia (County records, new series, Volume 1, page 27, Will abstract, VEEL, John March 10, 1718 land in Stafford County, Virginia to sons John & Morris and daughter Susan, wife Deliverance, executrix, brothers Humphrey POPE & Caudry VAUGHN, trustees. Inventory of Peter ETON on March 07, 1719”. Was Humphrey POPE married to John VEALE’S sister, Susan or was Deliverance a sister to Humphrey POPE (not named in either Will. To answer this question: John & Amy VEALE were brother and sister, the children of Morris & Dorothy Veale. John VEALE married Deliverance TAYLOR, and it was Amy Veale who married Humphrey POPE II. CAUDRY VAUGHN was a neighbor of the family in Westmoreland County, Virginia. All this information is not listed in this chapter but comes from the Wills of the Veale Wills (RLV)

5). William & Mary’s quarterly, series 1, 13:280-84. HUMPHREY & Elizabeth POPE names his mother-in-law in a deed to SPENCER for land in 1719,, and makes a deed to John in 1704, jointly with his wife “AMEY”. “His will names wife “MARY”. Apparently implying a second marriage, first married AMY, THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF MORRIS VEALE I. His children were: 1). ANNE who married CONDUIT; 2). daughter SOPHIA MUSE; 3). son HUMPHREY; 4). daughter Sarah POPE who married MR MUSE; 4). John; 5). Sarah; 6). And MARY who married WILLIAM MUSE”.

6). NOTE: Herein lays a major controversy. We all know that a divorce was unheard of in this day and time. What we have listed above is that Humphrey Pope II did marry both MARY & AMY, however, this as written would indicate Mary to be his 2nd wife. As these records indicates Amy did marry again to a man unknown and had a child named ELIZABETH. At this stage I’m going to assume that MARY had died prior to 1719, when Humphrey deeded lands to John and his wife AMY. If the dates were more defined this decision may have been easy to accomplish.

7). William COZIER, editor, Westmoreland County, Virginia Wills (County Records Publication, n. s., page 40 citing Will Book 8) “Humphrey POPE, January 10, 1732, October 29, 1734; daughter Ann CONDUIT; daughter Sophia MUSE; son Humphrey; daughter Sarah POPE, to my wife’s daughter, Elizabeth MORISON and four youngest, wife coz, Daniel Mc CARTY & Peter JET, executors”.

8). NOTE: This would indicate that AMY had married a MORISON, and their child was Elizabeth was a member of the Humphrey Pope II household as a step-child at the date of the Will (RLV)

9). Violet Noland Gray, Genealogical History of Robert Beheartlaud, Gentleman (Baltimore Gateway Press, 1978). Will, Humphrey POPE, January 10, 1734, children: ANN=CONDUIT; SOPHIA=MUSE, JOHN, MARY; ELIZABETH=MUSE, and ELIZABETH MORRISON, step-daughter. No HUMPHREY listed by Gray.

10). In a message from Ralph C. Veale to John Kent, dated August 29, 1998, 7:15 PM, Subject: Westmoreland County, Virginia

“John, there is a book “Pope’s Creek Plantation, Birthplace of George Washington by Charles E. Hatch Jr. published by Wakefield National Memorial Society in Heathsville, which is the seat of Northumberland County. There is a JAMES, THOMAS, NATHANIEL and John POPE in the area about the same time the County was formed in 1653.  Nathaniel POPE and John WASHINGTON were early settlers in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Both had extensive land holdings. Nathaniel POPE came to Westmoreland County, Virginia with his brothers John POPE, Nathaniel POPE I or John POPE. They were the only POPE’S in this area at the same time. AMY would have been a young woman. They probably went to the same church. It should not bee too difficult to trace their ancestry”. (RCV)
