Burial: Old Veal Family Cemetery, Washington County, Georgia

Synthia or Syntha, retarded child of Nathan Veal I was in her own right possessed a considerable amount of estate. Her guardianship was appointed to her brother Edward VEAL, Alexander GILES and Bryant O’Quinn were appointed to deal with land transactions for Synthia, orphaned child. In 1840, Benjamin BROOKINS was appointed guardian for Synthia VEAL. In 1843, Reuben BULLINGTON was appointed guardian for Synthia VEAL. (Administration Guardianship Book A, 1829-1871, Probate Court, Washington County, Georgia)
The Veale family originated in Ireland from Scot-Irish ancestry and in many cases came to the US through England. The VEALE FAMILY was in ESSEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA as early as 1693. The tax records of Henry County, Virginia for 1779 & 1780 shows that Nathan VEAL was a resident and property owner. The “e” was dropped from the mane, however, the record does not show exactly when. The Henry County, Virginia record shows that Nathan Veal I served in the Revolutionary War. Serving in John CUNNINGHAM’S Company, Virginia Militia under Colonel Abram PENN and his Company. They were ordered to march to North Carolina to General STEPHEN’S Company and prepare for the Battle of Guliford Court House between the Continental Forces under General GREENE and the British Forces under General CORNWALLIS. {This is where the South Carolina Forces also met up. My James Carr Veale I served here also (RLV) Sometime between the end of the Revolutionary War and 1875, Nathan to Amherst County, Virginia. He was listed on the Virginia Taxpayers, 1782-1787, as head of family. The Census of Amherst County, Virginia lists him as having 5 white souls. This would lead me to believe that he was a brother to Nathan VEAL I {READ ERROR} At this time we are talking about Nathan Veal I (RLV} Nathan VEAL established the line of VEAL’S in South Georgia around Saunderville and Deepstep area. Nathan was credited as one of the trailblazers in this book. He settled in Buffalo Creek in Washington County, Georgia. After 1790 move to Spartanburg, South Carolina, from Virginia for a brief time. Then he moved on into Hancock County, Georgia area between 1800 and 1805 where he is listed in the 1806 Land Lottery (Hancock County, Georgia Book G, pages 1807/8. (Note: I adjusted the dates as we found that Nathan was listed as a head of family 1800 in South Carolina Census}. On October 04, 1808, Nathan VEAL I of Washington County, Georgia to Moses BROWN 150 acres on Tiger Creek (Book D. pages 1817/8). Nathan was married when he came to Hancock County, Georgia. His ancestry believes he was on Buffalo Creek in 1790. NOTE: Nathan was in Amherst County, Virginia in 1785 or thereabouts, and was listed in the 1800 Census in South Carolina and was definitely found in Georgia in 1805. (RLV)
Nathan VEAL I, his wife Jane MILSTEAD, his son Nathan VEAL II, his wife Sallie THOMASON are interned in the Old Veal Cemetery, Washington County, Georgia (The Family Treemaker’s Archives-Census Index, Washington, D. C. 1830, page 276)
NOTE: If you are using “The History of Deepstep, Georgia” as sole references is is very great source. However, the lineage is faulted. The major children that are listed are in fact his brothers and in some cases grandchildren. This is not the fault of the author what-so-ever. At the time of it’s writing it was the Bible for Southern Veal’s. I took the entire year of 2002 to learn of this error (RLV)
At this time I’m going to insert the Veale Family of Essex County, Virginia. This was noted above.
Back in 1995, while trying to locate information on WILLIAM VEALE, the son of MORRIS VEALE I & DOROTHY of Westmoreland County, Virginia, Ralph C. Veale found a Will of WILLIAM VEALE OF ESSEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA. At first we believed this could be the William was the one. A few months later, Ralph came up with a Will of WILLIAM VEALE in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. This will proved to be the one we were hunting. William had no children of his own and named the children of his sister, Eleanor in this Will. (RLV)
On July 16, 2005, Janet ------------- contacted me via e-mail to see if I knew the name of William Veale of Essex County wife’s name. Unfortunately, to this date this has not been resolved. I’m placing this into this place to show proof of our findings on both William VEALE’S. (RLV)

END OF WILLIAM VEALE OF ESSEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Notes for NATHAN VEAL I:
From the book; “Gone to Georgia”, page 316, item 189, the only thing listed is VEAL: The Veal Family is from ESSEX County, Virginia, as early as 1693, and North Carolina as early as 1760. A VEAL family in Amherst County, Virginia has Georgia connections in the 1780’s. In 1820, EDWARD, GEORGE, NATHAN I and THOMAS, were enumerated in Washington County, Georgia. And JAMES in Madison County, Georgia; and in Putnam County, Georgia were ANDERSON, JOHN (2), JAMES, LEWIS D. and WILLIAM were enumerated in DeKalb County, Georgia, there CAROLINE married AUSTIN GREENE STEWART, son of ABSOLOM STEWART of Jackson County, Georgia. In 1850, among others, MORGAN VEAL, b. 1826 in Georgia was enumerated in DeKalb County, Georgia, near LAVINA, MORRIS (see pension papers of JAMES CARR VEALE, South Carolina W9586). In Jackson County, Georgia in 1850, EDWARD W., b. 1819 in Georgia. ELIJAN married ELIZABETH KIDD, born in Hall County, Georgia on September 29, 1822, Also in 1827, ALEXANDER VEAL and FRANCIS VEAL was listed in DeKalb County, Georgia (From the files of the late Carl W. Veale I)
MY COMMENTS:
1). On ESSEX COUNTY VIRGINIA (This is covered in the above parts of this writing (RLV). All indications this WILLIAM VEAL died in Essex County.
2.) ELIJAH VEALE, is the son of JOHN VEALE, the son of BOND VEALE, the son of JOHN VEALE I, the son of MORRIS I & DOROTHY. Beth Mitchell’s Book “A Beginning at White Oak” is on ELIJAH VEALE
3). This placement of JAMES CARR VEALE I & LAVINA TOWNSEND in the Gone to Georgia writing is misleading. This Book led to many misunderstandings between the Southern & Northern Veale researchers. Although both JAMES CARR VEALE I & NATHAN VEAL I were in South Carolina at the same time and both served in many of the same Battles, it was the Application for Pension of James Carr Veale I in Daviess County, Indiana (W9586) to resolve this misunderstanding.

These are the facts that can be documented in Amherst County, Virginia
Henry County, Virginia was formed from Pittslyvania County, Virginia in 1771
Virginia History, Volume 17,, page 190
March 11, 1781, Nathan VEAL was a member of John CUNNINGHAM’S Company of recruits to assist General Greene in the Battle of Guliford Court House in North Carolina
HENRY COUNTY TAX LISTS:
1778. The last page that would have included VEAL was missing.
1779, Nathan VEAL
February 20, 1780, Nathan VEAL, was Taxed for raising a supply of money for the service of the United States. Tax Lists to be delivered to Archaleus HUGHS, Esquire, Sheriff of the said County to collect. Due on 20th February 1780
1780, also included Richard THOMASON
There are no deeds or Marriages for any VEAL person, but there was a Marriage recorded for Richard THOMASON and Charity WHITAKER, by Michael DILLINGHAM (no date, but bonds were returned in October 1781 – March 20, 1782
There was an Order Book, a case of VEAL and wife vs. BAKER, fro which I failed to get a copy. (It might included her name)
AMHERST COUNTY, VIRGINIA:
These VEALE’S and related men were found in the book AMHERST COUNTY, VIRGINIA IN THE REVOLUTION 1773-1782
1. ZEAL MILSTEAD
2. FRANCIS VEAL
3. NATHAN VEAL
4. WILLIAM VEAL
Note: All these men were later found in Hancock County, Georgia
There are no Land or Deed records for Nathan VEAL in Amherst County, Virginia
August 18, 1785, page 24, Nathan VEAL, widower, to Jane MILSTEAD, spinster, daughter of Joseph MILSTEAD & Rebecca MILSTEAD. Witnesses: William CARTER, Moses TALIFERRO, Court Clerk
There is a very fragile copy of the Nathan VEAL and Jane MILSTEAD marriage bond on which he signed his name at Amherst County, Virginia Court House. It is interesting to see that he spelled his name “VEAL” no double L or e. This is a two piece marriage bond, one piece is the bond and the other is the consent of her parents
The Marriage Bond Reads:
Know all men present that Nathan VEAL, and William CARTER are firmly bonded unto Patrick HENRY, Governor to the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the sum of Fifty pounds current money of Virginia to be paid to the said HENRY and his successors we bind ourselves to each other and each of our Lives and Heirs. Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated the 18th day of August 1785. The conditions of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a wedding shortly intended the two bonded Nathan VEAL, widower, and Jane MILSTEAD, spinster, if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage, the above obligation to be voided. Signed, Sealed and delivered in the presence of John TALAFERRO (Signatures of Nathan VEAL & William CARTER.
The consent reads (the hand righting is different than the Bond)
We the undersigned does say that we are agreeable that Nathan VEAL shall have our daughter Jane MILSTEAD to be his wife. Signed by LEYLAND (?) and UNDERWOOD (these persons are likely the persons who wrote the consent) on August 18, 1875. Signed by: Joseph MILSTEAD and Rebecca MILSTEAD (This seems to be the same hand righting as the consent, so probably just touched the pen as the names were written by someone else)
Witnesses: Moses DAVIS & Abraham CARTER
On the reverse of the bond was written in the center section: “MILSTEAD & VEALE MARIAGE BOND”, by Mr. William LOVING
Note: There is no indication that CARNABY attended this wedding and under these circumstances it is not likely that he did.

The Commonwealth vs. Nathan VEAL, the Presentation Grand Jury for Fighting, came with the Plaintiffs by William CRAWFORD, Gentleman, their attorney, and also to Jury Witnesses: John BUCK (?), Pleasant MARTIN, Solomon ELLIS, Young LAUNDERSON, Melton CABELL, Thomas WALL, Edmund FOUNTAIN, KESTER (?), M. C. ALEXANDER, John WEST, William HARRISON, James W. ALEXANDER, and William WARE, who being elected first and sworn well and truly to try this suit, believes the parties upon their oath do say that the defendant is guilty, whereupon the said Nathan VEAL is fined forty shillings and costs of this suit.
Note: This Book was nearly destroyed by dry rot and is very difficult to read.
Note #2: During this period of time many other men were brought to Court on Adultery charges (including Zealous MILSTEAD and James WARE), so do not feel that this was such a great stigma in this era of time. However, Nathan did seem more reluctant than most and the marriage does seem to be made under duress, Jane was probably no more than 14 years old and he was most likely 35-40 years of age, a widower and an available male. Some of the duress came in the fact that the Commonwealth form of government was just coming into its strength, in many cases it was the parishes who pressed charges in the cases of adultery through the Courts instead of ex-communication from the church.
1790 RECONSTRUCTED VIRGINIA CENSUS:
Amherst County, Virginia (1783-1785)

2 females – 10 (b. 1790-1800)
1 female 16-26 (b. 1744 – 1784) Note: If this to be Nathan’s wife, Jane, she would have been at the most only 11 years old in 1785 the year of the marriage. Synthia Veal has an indicated birth of 1790.
Note #2: The age range for both male & females fits perfectly from the 1790 to 1800 Census. The record does not include any of the 5 white souls shown in the 1785 records of Amherst County, Virginia, except for Nathan himself. Nathan is NOT shown in the 1810 records in either Virginia or South Carolina.
LAND RECORDS FOR SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA:
1). December 10, 1789, Deed Book A, pages 323-325
Nathan VEAL bought from Michael MADDOX and his wife Jane 140 acres on the waters of Fair Forest Creek for the sum of 80 pounds sterling money. This is one-third part of a tract of land patented to James TILLETT, deceased, which was inherited by his daughter Jane MADDOX. This purchase was recorded November 16, 1794
2). July 20, 1796, Deed Book A, page 110, Morris VEAL of Oglethorpe County, State of Georgia executed a Quit Claim Deed to James SMITH of Spartanburg, South Carolina on August 04, 1796. It was witnessed and sworn by: Nathan WILLIFORD & William WOFFORD
3). September 25, 1800, Deed Book A, pages 268/9
Nathan VEAL sold 147 acres for 100 pounds to Thomas DAVIDSON. This appears to be the same land he purchased in 1798 from Michael & Jane MADDOX. It was recorded July 04, 1801
GEORGIA RECORDS
The family legend of several different families, of many area of Georgia says: “That three different families of VEAL came to Hancock-Deepstep area of Georgia in the early 1800’s”. Record supports this theory or legends. The information that is not clear is “Just who is who” age wise and relationship wise. The problem is the lack of records in Georgia for Nathan VEAL, William, & Francis VEAL that allows for any age or family structure.
It took the effort of five well qualified Veal family researchers sharing their hard
Work to assemble all the many records and place them into a study presentation.
Once doing so many items has fallen into the proper place satisfactorily. (RLV)

My Comments:
After a long study on restructuring the writings of Nell Zipfel (VEAL) and all the additional information supplied by many researchers. It is my opinion, that all is listed are parts of the same heritage. In this case it is just a relocation of the known persons into a proper lineage and not a complete change of all known facts. (RLV)
Notes for WILLIAM VEAL I:
The 1783 Make-up Census of Amherst County, Virginia shows:
VEAL, WILLIAM, AMHERST COUNTY OF VIRGINIA
Whites 6, Blacks 0, page 285 of the Spartan Reprint Company, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Heads of Family “First Census of the Untied States-1790”
1). Nell Zipfel (VEAL) in her letters to the late Carl W. Veale I, and the DeKalb County, Georgia Historical Society listings is that William VEAL I had a son, William VEAL II born July 18, 1790 in Virginia. And that he is of Scot-Irish ancestry who came from Scotland to the Colonies by the way of England. She, Nell also recorded according to the Concordance, that he was from Haddington, Scotland. This same information is also listed for Nathan VEAL I and Morris VEALE I of Westmoreland County, Virginia (RLV)
2). Again from Nell Zipfel (VEAL) the Bible listings shows William VEAL I had a son William VEAL II born July 17, 1778 in Virginia and lists his wife as Rebecca VEAL the daughter of Francis VEAL, she being a 1st cousin.
3). Nell Zipfel (VEAL) the late of Tampa, Florida lists herself as the great-great grand daughter of John VEAL, born July 28, 1790
Note: The conflict in the date of birth of William VEAL II will be corrected as we progress onwards (RLV)
4). In Nell’s letters to Carl W. Veal I (of which Lynda Veal has the only copy) she discusses her knowledge or lack there of Nathan VEAL I of Washington County, Georgia and his family. However, in this letter she showed no knowledge of a direct connection to her family of John VEAL, only did the Book “A History of Deepstep, Georgia show this connection (my error) as I had assumed that this writing to be fool proof as did so may other researchers
