ALSEY “ELSIE” VEALE

                                                  CHAPTER SIX

                                          THE VEALE FAMILY TREE

DESCENDANTS OF ALSEY “ELSIE” VEALE:

5th member of James Carr Veale I & Lavina Townsend Family

+ 1. ALSEY “ELSIE” VEALE (JAMES I 1), b. December 10, 1788 in Union County, South Carolina she m. JOSIAH WALLACE

Notes for ALSEY “ELSIE” VEALE:
The LDS Files, 416F of Virginia lists ELSIE VEALE, b. 1790, m. JOSHIAH WALLACE, he is listed in her father, James Carr Veale I’s will of February 16, 1839 as ALSEY ELIZABETH VEALE.
The Daviess County, Indiana Records Clerk’s drafting of this will noted that she married WILLIAM WALLACE, other documents lists her as ELSIE.
The 1850 Federal Census of Indiana lists ALSEY under the household of DANIEL VEALE, this second ALSEY may have been a daughter of Daniel (not proven).
Daniel Veale having a sister by the name of ALSEY, above being born in 1788 would have been 62 years of age. The ALSEY in the 1850 Census is listed as being 20 years old. However, the evidence is not strong enough to say that Daniel Veale & Mary Polly Coleman had a daughter named ALSEY. It would be quite unlikely at this jester of time.
The 1850 Mortality Schedule of Indiana shows a JOHN F. WALLACE, d. age 44 of Pneumonia in Daviess County, Indiana he was born in Ohio.

Child of ALSEY “ELSIE” VEALE & JOSHIA WALLACE is:
2.           i. WILLIAM WALLACE

MESSAGES FROM MARGE ANDERSON <marlloandersactionnet.net> Subject: Elsie Veale & Josiah Wallace
Margie writes: “If in fact your Josiah Wallace’s father was William Wallace, my
Josiah may be the son of John Wallace born in Virginia, died in Daviess County, Indiana in 1822. My Josiah died in Daviess County in 1819 (I personally can’t prove that, trying to get probate record) any chance you have a definite death date for Elsie’s Josiah, is 1845 correct? How about the burial?
I also have the problem of most my research into my father’s ancestors was done by a relative, which is 99% of the time correct. I have not published my tree, just keep in my computer (roots-magic) and two file cabinets and a file card (messy huh)
The Walker research depended a lot on “Genealogy of Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland” by Emily Siggins (John Walker was Elizabeth Magill Wlaker’s father).
I’m awaiting a document from the St. Louis Genealogocal Society, which was supposed to show that Josiah Wallace married Elsie Veale #1 and Elizabeth Magill Walker was wife #2, when I receive it will let you know what I have.”
“We think that 4 Wallace brothers came from Glasglow, Scotland about 1740 to PA, they were ROBERT HENRY, WILLIAM, JAMES & JOHN.  This John would have been the father of John Wallace born in Virginia in 1754 and fought in the Revolutionary War, went to South Carolina where Josiah was born, this family went to Indiana around 1808. Several of us are trying very hard to find the original Wallace boys”.
In an earlier message Margie writes:
“I am a descendant of a Josiah Wallace born about 1790 (were not 100% sure whether he was born in Virginia or South Carolina. We have been told he married Elsie Veale then had a 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Magill Walker (we know that our Josiah married Elizabeth Magill Walker from marriage record in the Indiana State Library. They were married December 16, 1818 in Daviess County, Indiana. Our Josiah died in 1819 and had only one son JOSIAH C. WALLACE born 1819 in Daviess County, Indiana. Elizabeth remarried a William Sparks”.
“I do not agree with others that my Josiah is the same one that married Elsie Veale, as I understand your Josiah died in 1845, any chance you can clear any of this up as we are trying to prove our Josiah was the son of  Rev. John Wallace, if he isn’t he must be the son of either Peter or Michael”.
In a later message, Margie writes:
“Robert, I just returned from the Family History Center and found this on film “Abstracts of Probate Records Clerk’s Office Daviess County, Indiana donated by Stella Bogner of the White River Chapter of the DAR”.  (My mother was also a member of this DAR. (RLV)
JAMES CARR VEALE SENIOR, February 16, 1839, Administrator, JOHN TOWNSEND VEALE, wife: LAVINA
SONS:
JAMES CARR VEALE JUNIOR & ELEANOR ELLEN AIKMAN
DANIEL VEALE & MARY (POLLY) COLEMAN
WILLIAM VEALE & ELIZABETH STEPHENSON
DAUGHTERS:
CATHERINE VEALE & JAMES ARRELL & REUBEN KILGORE
ALSEY (ELIZABETH) & WILLIAM WALLACE
Note: This is the big question, why (ELIZABETH)? This is the only place that this name is listed. (RLV)
NANCY VEALE & JAMES LETT
JAMES CARR VEALE buried on Singleton Farm, Daviess County, Indiana (so your records are correct) Margie
“Also this,
JOSIAH WALLACE, Probate December 11, 1832, Administrators: ALSEY WALLACE, and NICHOLAS WALLACE no mention of wife.
Heirs: JAMES WALLACE, ELLEN WALLACE, DANIEL WALLACE, ALSEY WALLACE, LAVINA WALLACE, SARAH WALLACE, CATHERINE ANN WALLACE and WATIS WALLACE (ring any bells) Marge
The only thing that I can change on this last item, is that, the Ft. Wayne Historical Library shows that Josiah Wallace 1st Administrator is listed as ALSEY WALLACE (VEALE), and the heir ALSEY WALLACE was not the Administrator. However, this information was presented to the Library by Myrtle Lucille Veale (Sheetz), my mother, and Mrs. Roy Bogner of the White River DAR.
Marge Anderson’s conclusion:
Now about the Wallace-Veale connection, I cannot vouch for this information as I did not do the research. This research is being done by the descendants of a Rev. John Wallace born about 1754 in Virginia, was in the Revolutionary War, married Eleanor Morgan, lived in South Carolina where his children were born and moved to Indiana about 1806 or 1808. His children were: WILLIAM born 1786 in Union County, South Carolina he m. SARAH HORRALL; MARY who married MOSES MORGAN; NANCY CALVERT who married THOMAS HORRALL; COLMAN married SARAH CHAPMAN; WESLEY married RACHEL CHAPMAN; MORGAN married ELIZABETH LUCAS; SARAH married JOHN NEWCOMBE; NICHOLAS married MARY BALLOU/BALLOW; and JOSIAH WALLACE born about 1790 in South Carolina and married according to these researchers (and the DAR Chapter at Bedford, Indiana) ELSIE VEALE and they claim a 2nd marriage to my ancestor ELIZABETH MAGILL WALKER. Now I think they are wrong about the 2nd marriage to my Elizabeth Walker. #1 it is documented that my Josiah married Elizabeth Walker on December 16, 1818, he was certainly old enough to have had an earlier marriage, if it was Elsie Veale then she would have had to be dead by 1818 or he was a cad and left her for another woman (which I reject)
#2 My Josiah died (if my family researchers are correct, I’m still trying to confirm this)in 1819 and I have papers (thanks to the John Wallace researchers) that shows a Josiah Wallace and a William Wallace were Administrators of John Wallace will and that a William Wallace were the Administrators of the John Wallace Will and that Josiah Wallace signed papers regarding this will until 1831, which certainly proves to me that Josiah Wallace, Administrator, is not my Josiah Wallace.
Another thing you may find interesting is that John Wallace’s son William Wallace who married Sarah Wallace had a son William Wallace who married an Elizabeth (Betsy Veale). I think this marriage took place February 08, 1837 (you can check this out on the Indiana State Library website under marriages to 1850) {Confirmed} RLV. This does prove a Wallace/Veale connection to the Rev. John Wallace.
Since your Alsey Veale was still alive in 1850 and I cannot find any evidence that my Josiah was alive in the 1820 census.
I have to concede that my Josiah is not the son of Rev. John Wallace; since your ELIZABETH (ALSEY) VEALE was born in South Carolina it is possible she married Josiah Wallace the son of Rev. John Wallace, but if she married a William Wallace, then I haven’t any idea unless it would be Peter Wallace or Michael Wallace family, also from Scotland. Making things more complicated, there are 3 John Wallace’s who fought in the Revolutionary War and are buried in Indiana.

MARGE, YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB IN YOUR PRESENTATION (RLV)
MY COMMENTS:
It was Marge’s comments that caused me to make a complete review of my known records, the first KEY comes from the Probate of James Carr Veale Senior, it lists his youngest son, John Townsend Veale as Administrator of this Will. John’s mother, Lavina was still alive at this time. She died about 1844. Alsey was listed in this Will as ALSEY (ELIZABETH) VEALE, I added the “ELSIE” from the LDS records of Virginia. Alsey’s youngest brother, John with her mother present had listed her name as ALSEY (ELIZABETH) VEALE. With this in mind, I directed my search to the Territorial Records, Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. Here I found no marriage listed for ALSEY VEALE but I found an ELIZABETH VEAL who had married JOSIAH WALLACE, this would be a date prior to 1816 when Indiana became a State.  This date would be conclusive to the fact that Alsey was born December 10, 1788 in Union County, South Carolina and Josiah was born about 1790 in the same area. In a check of the web site on “Davis” County, Indiana in Bedford, Indiana, here we found that in the 1850 Census, about half way through this census the name was changed from VEAL to VEALE. But it contained no marriage date confirmed is the notation found in the Territorial Capital was the same.  Therefore, I concur with Marge on our family heritage. (RLV)

ADDED NOTE: I have contacted Ed and Donna Cosby eddon2121@verizon.net. They are the source of the notes by Margie and they concur that the listings are quite correct. However, we all need some help from another source. The DAR has refused Certification to the Cosby’s due to the lack of proof that Rev. John Wallace served in the American Revolutionary War. So far the record of South Carolina does not confirm that he served in the war. We are aware that some soldiers did receive land grants for their service in our War of Freedom. For instance, my James Carr Veale I did receive land grants in South Carolina, of which he sold prior to moving to Indiana, Nathan Veal I who went to Washington County, Georgia did not receive land grants in South Carolina, but gained County Grants in Georgia for his service in the War of Revolution. Some persons believe that Indiana did give land grants to the soldiers and or their sons and widows. In my extensive search in the Southern Indiana records, no proof has been found to this date. If anyone can site the location of such records in either South Carolina or Indiana, please let us know. So far, I’ve been able to find that in South Carolina, Mr. Wallace did not receive a land grant from the Commander-in-Chief and Gov. of South Carolina. I’m in the process of checking all deeds in the early era of South Carolina. We well know that many of the families who came from Virginia were plantation owners of which they sold prior to moving on into South Carolina. SOS, PLEASE HELP!! (RLV)
