ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
). Charles C. Veale I, my late father, who spent countless hours in Old Courthouses, collecting hand drawn copies of marriage records, land transactions, churches, cemeteries, and talking with many of his elders. This collection contained over 90 pounds of papers to work with related to this subject
). Myrtle Lucille Veale (Sheetz), my late mother, who was a White River DAR member and the 13th member of the Local Genealogy Society in Washington, Indiana. Her collection expertise was into her Sheetz and Edward background and assisted dad and grand dad Veale in their work.
). William Herbert Veale, my late grandfather, and Jane C. Pierce, Thomas (Bratton) who jointly recorded the family records in their possession prior to their demise in 1953 and 1928 respectively. Jane was a mid wife for the family and recorded her many births and the like into Public Records Office. She was also one of the key writers in the Old Veale-Thomas Ledger. Grandfather was a witness to most of these events.
). Sharan Rose Gasper (Veale), my sister who permitted me to gain possession of the 90 pounds of paperwork that Dad & Mom had collected on our family subject. She also provided a complete up date on her own family.
). Walter Keith Veale I, my brother, who supplied most of our mother’s collection of documents and materials. He also provided the information on his family and his wife’s heritage.
). the late Mary Delores Alice Henry (Veale), who provided all of our mother’s Bible notations.
). Mrs. Fern O. Veale, a very dear lady, who was a member of the late Carl W. Veale I’s: “The Veale Family Association, of which Carl W. Veale I was the Publisher and Editor. These files were of the early Veale’s of Virginia; the Veale’s of the United Kingdom, and all the letters in his collection concerning our James Carr Veale I”.
). The late Mrs. Lucille Bernice Hewitt (Veale), a DAR and Genealogy Society member who supplied through many sources he families of William Thompson Veale, a son of James Carr Veale I. Her daughter Ronda Lynn Hall and Donald W. Veale has added so very much to the California Veale collection
). Mr. & Mrs. Curtis Hunter of Indianapolis, Indiana, made several trips back to Virginia and South Carolina collecting every scrap of information pertaining to Veale or any similar spelling of the name. It was she, Richard Alan Keiffer, Lucille Bernice Hewitt and my father who hired Mr. Robert Lee Croates of Leesburg, Virginia; a professional genealogist to search out records on our James Veale. Mr. Croates opinion was that Bond Veale was more than likely our James’ father. Just about a month prior to Mrs. Mardenna Hunter’s demise we did chat over the phone; our discussion was over her parental placement to our James Veale. She conceded that she was in error when writing that our James Carr Veale had married Lydia Carr in Loudoun County, Virginia. And did agree that my researching was correct, ie, it was William Veale I who married Lydia Turley, and the children listed were the correct children and not that of our James. Mardenna directed her daughter to mail me a complete copy of her manuscript to be updated and a copy sent back to her family. The Hunters are directly connected to our family in Daviess County, Indiana and will be listed in this work-up.
). Mrs. Lottie Lehew of Montana who’s letters to the late Carl W. Veale I provided much information into the family of Daniel Veale, a son of James I and my g-g grandfather. Lottie is related to Daniel’s son, Daniel Coleman Veale and did resolve the mystery into George Veale. This George was listed as a son of Daniel, but instead is he grandson to Daniel
). Richard Alan Keffer, the writer and publisher of the “Veale-Ragsdale Families”, or his later version of “The Goodly Heritage”. Much of his writings are included into this writing. He too married into this family group
). “A History of Daviess County, Indiana” by Fulkerson (1915). He was commissioned by Daviess County Commissioners to develop an in-depth study into the early settlers of Daviess County. This was a large book, of which I’ve had to see only a few times, and this copy is in Flagstaff, Arizona in the hands of Zed Veale II
). Eliza Hyatt, it is her letters to my mother that established the Veale-Hyatt connections. She is of Washington, Indiana.
). Ralph Carr Veale, a member of the James Carr Veale II family and a devoted family researcher along with me. He has provided a data base of the LDS Ancestry Files of Virginia and Maryland; the Mrs. John Bennett Boddie’s, “History of Southern Families” found in the Library of Congress. This is a comprehensive study into the Norfolk County, Virginia Veale’s, and was very important in resolving so many of the like first names of the early Virginia era. He also located the Wills of William Veale of Essex County, Virginia and that of William Veale in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Although Ralph is getting a bit older, and just had a valve replaced in his heart, he is still very active in family researching and a great pal of mine.
). Zed Veale of Flagstaff, Arizona, Ralph’s older brother has provided his files many interesting items on his father, Zed I and the Ritter family of the early era of Daviess County, Indiana. It was he and his brother who led me to the intricate finds on Colonel George Washington Veale I and his descendants, Colonel George is also of the family of James Carr Veale II.
). Mary Catherine Veale, Ralph and Zed II’S sister has come up with a number of old newspaper writings that has aided me in tying some of the family members together. Sorry to say Mary Catherine passed away in June 1999.
). Mrs. Nancy Anderson of New Mexico is a member of the earliest of Carter-Veale connections of early Virginia. Nancy was a duel Web Master and constantly assists in the overall researching program. It was she who provided Mrs. Beth Mitchell’s finds on the “Paul Turley Genealogy”. This writing shows the female side of the William Veale I & Lydia Turley family. Nancy is currently the President of the New Mexico Genealogy Society and had to give up her duel web sites and concentrate on her Carter work.
). Lynda Veale of Magnolia, Texas, she being a Web Master and a degree in Computer Sciences is connected to the Nathan Veal I family of Washington County, Georgia. Her attributes and helping hand is so extensive one could write a book on her accomplishments. The primary accomplishment is teaching me how to use the Family Tree Maker modified version of presentation. However, Lynda ran into many personal reverses and it was she and Nancy Anderson who has permitted me to transfer her work to our own web site. This was a large and onerous task that took me almost a year to prepare for our own web site. This task was completed yesterday, August 16, 2007 and will be sent on to our Web Master this coming Monday.
). Maude Matilda Robinson (Veale), my aunt has constantly supplied me with newspaper writings, the family history along with so many family members addresses, and one heck of a lot of moral support. She being the only living member of the family of William Herbert Veale, my grandfather. Deceased in August 2007 (Maude)
). Margie Veale of West Chester, Ohio, it was her effort that helped me catch up with her husband, Roy Earl Veale, the youngest son of William Herbert Veale. Again my thanks to you, Aunt Margie!!
). Aunt Wanda Veale has passed away it was her effort that helped me update her and Uncle Woody’s family. It is now her daughter who is currently helping us to keep up.
). One can NOT forget, Van A. Stilley of Wilmington, North Carolina, Attorney, retired. He is actually the “GRAND DADDY” of the most earliest of Veale writing adventures. Your lineages provided the known Will’s is still the guideline for all us family researchers. Your work has been modified somewhat but is as solid as ever. It is still a pleasure to work with all your many facets into the family researching.
). Also not to be forgotten is Rick Saunders of Salt Lake City, Utah. A Professional Genealogist at LDS, and a connected family member by the way of Eleanor Veale, the daughter of Morris Veale I & Dorothy. Your help has been an inspiration to each and every-one of us family researchers. We are deeply thankful for your aid and impute into this onerous study program.
). I’m fully aware that a large number of Cousins, Nephews, Nieces, Aunts, Uncles and many direct descendants did help immensely in this adventure. Although not named specifically, YOUR HELP WAS BADLY NEEDED AND DEFINITELY APPRECIATED. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAS MADE THIS FAMILY PROJECT FAR MORE COMPLETE AND VERY INTERESTING. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO EACH OF YOU HELPERS
WHERE HAVE ALL THE DAVIESS COUNTY, INDIANA VEALE’S GONE?
JAMES CARR VEALE SENIOR IS RECONISED AS BEING THE THIRD SETTLER IN DAVIESS COUNTY, INDIANA in 1810, BEFORE INDIANA BECAME A STATE IN 1816. He and his family came to Indiana Territory from South Carolina
By the mid 1860’s there were listed more than 360 Veale Heads of Family in Daviess County, Indiana. And today, this number has dwindled to less than 20 Families. This family project will give us some idea as to WHERE WE HAVE ALL GONE?
One could spend many hours dealing with the family and the hardships encountered as being the third family to settle in the then raw wilderness, their failures and successes. In this writing I will deal with the known and written documents that have been found on this family, this way, we all can see and know what has been found, so far
In spite of all that has been found, the big mystery remains: “Who are his parents?” We could talk of a lot of speculation, but the truth remains, no positive proof exists, yet. Sorry to say!
