NORFOLK CO., VA
THE VEALE OF NORFOLK COUNTY, VIRGINIA
THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES OF VIRGINIA
DESCENDANTS OF MORRIS VEALE SENIOR:
+ 1. MORRIS VEALE I (ANDREW 1), b. circa 1655-60, d. 1706 in Norfolk County, Virginia he m. 1st ELIZABETH JOHNSON, and probably married 2nd SARAH (?)
NOTE: As to the second marriage to SARAH is very doubtful. The only known Morris VEALE in Virginia to have married SARAH Unknown last name is MORRIS VEALE II of Prince William County, Virginia. His family is listed in the Northern Neck of Virginia Veale.
NOTE #2: Until Ralph Carr Veale of Rockville, Maryland located the Library of Congress writing by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie there was a massive mix-up of the similar named members in the Westmoreland County, and Norfolk County, Virginia Veale families. Thanks to Ralph’s finds at long last it was possible to get a handle on this large confusion mess.
More about ANDREW VEALE:
Source: Place Lists of the United Kingdom.
Andrew Veale was baptized in Holbert County, Devonshire, England on October 14, 1621. He was the Master of the Sailing Ship PROVIDENCE and is known to have illegally removing his fellow Veale’s to the Colonies, and may have settled here himself.
UP DATE ON ANDREW VEALE:
He did get captured while illegally importing his fellow Veale’s into Virginia in the Portsmouth area. His ship and crew was over taken by a British Man of War, arrested and put ashore in North Carolina along with the passengers. The Old High Court of Admiralty shows that he was sentenced into captivity in Australia, but he never showed up in down under. The real truth comes from Lee Smith of Mexico City, Mexico. These records indicate that Andrew Veale did never settle in the American Colonies, but escaped into Mexico, where he married and has a large family in this Country. Even to this day the name Veale is used as the middle name but is often connected to the Villa surname in numerous variations of this name spelling.
More about MORRIS VEALE I:
WILL: The Will of Morris Veale, dated June 20, 1705, and probated February 15 and 16, 1706, mentions his sons William, Morris and John and my six children William, Elizabeth, Morris, John and Jenny (Note: This says six children but only five is listed). ELIZABETH VEALE, the widow, deeded to her son Morris part of the land she had inherited from her brother, JAMES JOHNSON in 1708 and 1717 (Book #8, page 26; Book #10, page 652), and to her son John part of the same in 1718 (Book #10, pages 24-25). Morris Veale II was born circa 1687, being 21 when she first deeded land by his mother in 1708, , appears in the tithables as head of household in 1730.He married prior to August 18, 1721, to DIANA, widow of WILLIAM DEAL or DALE (Orders & Wills 1719-23, pages 36, 43 and 64), died in Norfolk County in late 1749 or early 1750, having a wife, SARAH, and leaving minor sons. On January 18, 1749/50 SARAH VEALE was appointed Administrator of MORRIS VEALE, deceased (O Book, 1746-50, page 114). JOHN VEALE, who was living as a tithable in the family of AMOS ETHERIDGE (#75, the number that was assigned to Etheridge family by the Library of Congress Reports) in 1754m seems that the elder son of MORRIS VEALE. A younger son was GEORGE VEALE ** ORPHAN SON ** of MORRIS VEALE, for whom GEORGE COLLINS II signed as guardian bond, June 19, 1760. On June 19, 1760, the church wardens were ordered to bind Thomas Veale to Collins, and Thomas Veale chose Collins as guardian ( O Book 1759-63, page 41) so apparently Morris had two younger sons. GEORGE & THOMAS. Sarah, his 2nd wife, of MORRIS VEALE was married to WILLIAM ALKS by February 16, 1758 (Audits 1, page 21). John VEALE, third son of Morris I & Elizabeth Johnson, along with Milbry, his wife, 1731/2 (D Book 11, page 17) after this he disappeared from the records of Norfolk County, Virginia. His wife and daughter of WILLIAM BALLENTINE whose will, dated 1747 mentions among other heirs, a daughter MILBRY VEALE. JOHN MILBRY Deeded land to {Colonel} Crafford on January 19, 1731/2 (Book 11, page 17)
From the Library of Congress, item titled: VEALE-JOHNSON-CRATCHETT:
MORRIS VEALE, grandfather of ABIGAIL ETHERIDGE (VEALE), was born 1655/60), and died in Norfolk County in 1706. Morris may have been the son or other relative of Andrew Veale, Master of the sail ship PROVIDENCE, who is mentioned in a record, April 17, 1688 (book #5, part 2, Orders, no page numbers). MORRIS’ Wife was ELIZABETH JOHNSON, daughter of JAMES & ELIZABETH JOHNSON of Norfolk County, Virginia. JAMES JOHNSON born 1620, his wife ELIZABETH in 1636, according to their disposition November 09, 1756 (Book D, page 37), JAMES died 1673, his will dated January 08, 1672/3, and probated May 09, 1673 (Book E, page 143), his wife, ELIZABETH: Daughters JANE & MARY; leaves 30 acres; and JAMES whom he appoints Executor. The son James died without issue prior to 1681. Jane seems to have died about the same time or earlier. James II’S land was inherited by three sisters: CATHERINE who married JOHN GRIFFIN on June 16, 1681 (O Book 1675-86, no page number). By either 1st or 2nd husband JOHN TULLY who inherited her share of the land in 1704 (Book #7, pages 59, 67, and 70). ELIZABETH, wife of MORRIS VEALE (Book #5, Orders, January 15, 1691/2, no page numbers), also Book #7, pages 59, 67, & 70), And MARY, wife of HENRY NICHOLS, her husband, was exempted from levy July 19, 1823 (Wills & Orders 1719-23, page 62), dated December 30, 1728 and probated May 05, 1730 (Wills & Orders 1719-23, page 62), and died 1730, his will. Eldest son HENRY, sons JAMES & RUICHARD, daughter SARAH NICHOLS, wife MARY; his five daughters and son WILLIAM to share his estate after the death of his wife
