Notes for NATHAN THOMAS:
He is listed in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana Census, but I don’t have this record. IAW that David Thomas’ family is also listed in this census, it is quite possible that be a brother or son of David who came from Wales in 1814. However, the age span does indicate him to be the son of Bennett & Elizabeth Thomas. I do concur with this theory with one exception, that is, when David Thomas arrived in Daviess County, Indiana he was indicated to be only 16 years and was from Wales. There were three Thomas brothers who came from Wales at the same time; one went to Kentucky, the other to Iowa. I’m holding Nathan Thomas in this position because the lineage draft of Emily’s grandmother shows him as a son of this Bennett Thomas Family. (RLV)

Notes for SOLOMON THOMAS:
On August 24, 2110 11:26 AM Emily Terrell writes:
A bit of new information re: the Thomas’ who went to Iowa {Bennett’s son Solomon and his family}: Solomon died in 1880, just a few months before Iowa started issuing death certificates, so I wrote to a Jones County, Iowa look-up genealogist to see if she could find an obituary for Solomon, my great grandfather. It just came, with information I had never heard or even hinted at.
Anomosa {Iowa} Eureka, 29 April 1880 DIED- Mr. Solomon Thomas, of Cass, sent to Independence last winter on account of derangement, died at the Asylum last Saturday and was brought home and buried, the Rev. Bishop Isabell preaching the funeral sermon.
As we had occasion to remark at the time of Mr. Thomas’ removal from his home, he was one of the oldest and the most esteemed citizens of the county, and this sad ending of such a useful life has brought sorrow to many hearts. He accumulated a considerable competency by his industry and good management and leaves his family in a very comfortable circumstances, his age was over 71, and an aged companion and five grown-up sons and daughters morn his sad death
{Actually, he left 5 grown-up sons and 3 grown-up daughters, but I guess that daughters didn’t count. (ET)
Solomon and Eliza Ann farmed in the Hawkins Prairie area of Daviess County, Indiana for 23 years. In 1856, when Solomon sold his farm to Charmer Hawkins {a freed black who lived adjacent} and took his family West. They were headed for Minnesota, but stopped for night at a spring in eastern Iowa. A Captain Alderman who lived near the spring came to visit, was impressed with the family, knew of a local farm for sale, and persuaded Solomon to settle there.

2nd Marriage to WILLIAM THOMAS
Notes for JANE C. BRATTON:
1). Jane was abandoned by her 1st Husband, JOHN W. PIERCE, leaving her with three young daughters and no visual means of support.
2). The census shows that she and her three daughters was in the family of Bennett Thomas & Elizabeth Betsey in 1850.
3). At this time a divorce was an unknown thing, so she got a Court Order on the grounds of desertion.
4). She then married William Thomas, the son of Bennett Thomas & Elizabeth Betsey.
5) After the demise of William Alexander Veale and Margaret Anne Pierce, her daughter, she Jane took over the upkeep of the Veale Ledger which was started by James Senior himself.
6). She served as a Mid Wife in many births of the area. Just after 1900 but before 1903, she and William Herbert Veale (my grandfather) presented notary papers to the Daviess County, Indiana Clerk’s Office; I have used many of these notary papers in this writing.

The 1850 Daviess County, Indiana Census lists him less than a year old and
as AIKMAN THOMAS, but his children always assumed his middle initial
stood for ALBERT.
MY COMMENTS:
The middle initial “A” could have well been AIKMAN; in this early era the
Aikman family was a prominent name. The young and budding minister of the
Maysville Church was James AIKMAN Veale, and this was the one and only
Church in Maysville. (RLV)

BIOGRAPHY: From A History of Daviess County, Indiana by Fulkerson (1915)
“There are a few ex-soldiers in Daviess County who are more widely known than Mr. Peek. The ranks of the noble organizations to which he belonged in the days of his youth are fast diminishing. It is fitting that in a publication of this nature, special tribute to be paid to those who served in the greatest Civil War known in history. Charles was educated in the common schools and upon his maturity, took up farming as his life’s vocation. He entered Company F, 10th Cavalry, in the fall of 1863 and was discharged in the fall of 1865. He was attached to the 136th Regiment and never wounded nor taken prisoner during the war. He was in a train wreck enroute to the south, in which accident he was slightly wounded”.
“Mr. Peek owns 113 acres of land where he lives and 33 acres in the bottoms, in Veale Township. Charles and Julia are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Charles is a Republican and has served as a road supervisor and constable of Veale Township”.
