1850 Indiana Mortality Schedules, by Jackson
CATHERINE THOMAS, Daviess County, Indiana, age 29, female, died in June, born in Iowa, cause of death unknown.
NOTE: This Mortality Schedule has 40 Thomas deaths listed. The only one for Daviess County, Indiana is Catherine. Again I have this book at home. (RLV)
THE DAVIESS COUNTY, INDIANA THOMAS’ FROM WALES
THE THOMAS FAMILY TREE
DESCENDANTS OF DAVID THOMAS:
1. DAVID THOMAS (probably DAVID I) b. 1800-1810 in Wales, arrived in Indiana in 1814 he m. SARAH ALLENDAR on March 19, 1832 in Indiana she b. (1810-1820) the daughter of WILLIAM ALLENDAR
Daviess County, Indiana- David Thomas puzzle:
1). From all indications two David Thomas’ did exist in Daviess County, Indiana. This David is the one from Wales and David Thomas, son of Bennett and Elizabeth, he being born March 28, 1814 in Jessamine County, Kentucky
2). At this time were listing all the information from the records in Indiana.
Material source: Emily Terrell eterrell@flash.net
1807:
Indiana Territory Census:
No David Thomas listed.
Note: In 1807, neither David Thomas could have been in Daviess County, Indiana.
1814:
March 28, 1814, birth of David Thomas and Delila Thomas, twins and children of Bennett Thomas & his wife Elizabeth; they were born in Jessamine County, Kentucky
Note: The David Thomas, son of Bennett & Elizabeth Thomas was born in 1814, whereas the David Tomas, subject of this writing was supposed to have arrived in Daviess County, Indiana about this year.
1820:
Indiana State Census – Daviess County, Indiana data lost:
David Thomas households listed in this State of Indiana census (1820)
DAVID, page 143, OWEN COUNTY 011301 21201 0500

Note: This has been verified by my census books. (RLV)
1830:
David Thomas household recorded in the State of Indiana (1830)
DAVID, in CLAY COUNTY, page 272
Abstract of Will: WILLIAM ALLENDER, August 1846 mentions the following heirs:
JOSEPH ALLENDER
SALLY ALLENDER m. DAVID THOMAS
ELIZABETH ALLENDER m. JAMES HYATT
AMANDA ALLENDER m. WILLIAM SUTTON
MARY ANN ALLENDER n. THOMAS HARRELL (children: ISAAC HARRELL, MARTHA HARRELL, and MARYANN HARRELL}
Source: Abstract of Probate Records 1817-1850, Clerk’s Office, Daviess County, Indiana compiled by Mrs. Stella Bogner. Donated by White River Chapter of the DAR, part 1
Note: On April 18, 2001 the staff in the Clerk’s Office could not find these records. (ET)
Question: Why are Sally Allender Thomas’ children not named, as are Mary Allender Harrell’s children are? Or was the filing, not the writing date?
Answer: From the Palmer-Hamer Genealogies, it lists that Sarah was stolen by the Indians about 1844-1847, and never was found. Her date of death may never be known. The 1840 Census shows that 2 males and two females were in this family. Without further information such as adoption, baptismal records, etc. this may also never be known. Unless someone has more information of Births, Deaths, Marriage or School records, were up a stump on this one. Perhaps some of Fenwick and Sarah’s descendants can come up with the answers if they can be found, (RLV)
1850:
Indiana State Census – Daviess County:
Note: In the 1850 census Delila’s twin, David would have been 36 years, a fair and proven fact.
Note #2: In the 1850 census there are four stray Thomas youngsters scattered through Veale & Washington Townships, including one Fenwick known to have been the child of David Thomas and Sarah Allender.
1). FENWICK THOMAS, age 12, {living with ELIJAH & ELIZABETH SHELL BANKS, Veale Township, dwelling #497
Note: Fenwick fits the 1840 census for David Thomas,
2). EDMOND THOMAS, age 08 {living with John & Lavina Right Thomas, Washington Township.
Note: He would have been born after the 1840 census. This child might have been born to Lavina {at the age of 44?} and named for the earlier deceased Edmond, or he might be a child of John’s brother David, but not of John’s brothers Edmund, James or Solomon.
3). MARY THOMAS, age 11, in Veale Township in the household of David and Mary Coleman.
Note: This child fits the 1840 census for David Thomas.
4). SARAH THOMAS, age 6, in Washington Township in the household of Cecila Collins, age 57, with Diana Collins, age 22, and Robert Collins, age 18.
Note: She would have been born after the 1840 census; might have been named for her mother {SARAH is a common name}
Question: What became of the boy and girl who were 5-10 years old in the David Thomas household in 1840?
Answer: The boy aged 1-10 years old was Fenwick, the girl is still unknown. I’m placing the family just as it is listed in the 1840 census, hoping that someone can supply the missing names. (RLV)
DAVID, in GIBSON COUNTY, page 163
DAVID, in POSEY COUNTY, Black Township, page 174
DAVID, in MONTGOMERY COUNTY, page 15
DAVID, in FAYETTE COUNTY, page 39
ADAVID, in RIPLEY COUNTY, page 20
My notes: This is verified by my census books. (RLV)
1832:
On March 19, David Thomas married Sarah Allender
Source: Indiana Marriages through 1850 {Indiana State Library, Genealogy Division, electronic data base}
Note: Delila’s twin would have been only 18 years old.
1840:
INDIANA STATE CENSUS, DAVIESS COUNTY:
NOTE: THIS IS A KEY POINT OF THIS STUDY, AS DAVID THOMAS, SON OF BENNETT AND ELIZABETH IS LISTED IN THE 1850 DAVIESS COUNTY CENSUS AS BEING AGED 37 AND STILL LIVING WITH HIS PARENTS. (RLV)
DAVID THOMAS
1 male – 5 (b. 1835-1840)
1 male 5-10 (b. 1830-1835) {FENWICK, b. June 05, 1838}
1 male 30-40 (b. 1800-1810) {DAVID}
1 female 5-10 (b.1830-1835)
1 female – 4 (b. 1835-1840)
1 female 20-30 (b. 1910-1820) {SARAH, his wife}
NOTE: From the Harry Mason Palmer III PALMER HAMER GENEALOGY, Fenwick was born June 05, 1838 in Harrison Township, Daviess County, Indiana and would fit this census location, Whereas, David the son of Bennett and Elizabeth, according to the 1850 census would be only 26 years old and not 30 as this census would indicate and living at home. (RLV)
Emily Terrell’s notes:
1). Delila’s twin would have been 26 years old. Correct (RLV)
2). If this David Thomas arrived with his brothers from Wales in 1814, he was only 4-10 years old on arrival. Correct (RLV)
3). Households of Bennett, David, James and John all appears on the census page 35 in Washington Township. Correct (RLV)
MY COMMENTS:
Emily you do make some very good points in he above listings. Well worth keeping in mind for further references. At this time we do have a good idea above a fair guess. (RLV)
1860:
INDIANA STATE CENSUS, DAVIESS COUNTY:
DAVID THOMAS, age 53, b. 1807 in Kentucky – Steele Township, page 723
Note: Delila’s twin would have been 46 years old.
Note: There were no other Thomas’ on pages 723, 722 or 724; a group of Thomas’ appears on page 628.
Note: FENWICK THOMAS, age 22, Veale Township, page 628 (no other Thomas’ on page 628).
Note: By knowing the date of birth of Fenwick Thomas as being June 05 1838 would make him 22 years old in 1860, making this an accurate find.
NOW FOR AN ANALOG OF OUR MANY DISCUSSIONS:
EMILY AND I DID CHECK OUT ALL KNOWN FACTORS ON THE TWO DAVID THOMAS’ AND HERE IS SOME OF THE CONCLUSIONS:
1). David Thomas the son of Bennett & Elizabeth Thomas was born with his twin Delila on March 28, 1814 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. On David, Grandma Julia Ann Thomas who married Levi Peek listed him as a Thomas Boy along with the rest of Bennett’s male sons. He died but we know not just when.
2. David Thomas who came from Wales as a young boy with two of his brothers. One of these brothers went to Kentucky, the other to Iowa, and the remaining brother later went to Iowa later. He married Unknown.
3. I will place the rest of the details in the proper place with the person names.
