v. WILLIAM VEALE
More about the CHILDREN:
Material sources: Carl W. Veale Sr.’s Search Program on the Virginia-Carolina Veale’s. The above listed children are listed as brother or sister’s of George Elmer Veale.
My Comments: In Fulkerson’s History of Daviess Co., IN, lists George Veale as a member of the family of Daniel. Mrs. Lottie Lehew of Montana in her extensive search into the family of Daniel, of which she made many trips back to Daviess County, and found Andrew Jackson Veale to be the son of Daniel and Mary, and that, George is a grandson of Daniel instead of a son. My own father, Charles C. Veale really confused the issue, he had listed a George M. Veale as being this George, however, the George M. he listed turned out to be GEORGE M. CARR, my grandmother’s brother. Lottie is the person who related that Daniel Veale did likely die in Missouri.

NOTES: The daviess Co., IN records as written are very cinfusing on this
person. The memorandum from the Clerk's office lists his date of birth as
being February 17, 1816, however, the 1850 Indiana Federal Census shows a
PLESANT MILES VEALE as being born in the year of 1834. This year of birth
is in fact the yob of JOHN M. (MILES) VEALE, #21 vii. in the family of
JAMES CARR VEALE JR. & ELINOR AIKMAN. The Daviess Co., IN Marriage Records
has two lines on this subject: MILES PLESANT VEALE, m. RACHEL CHAPMAN on
November 21, 1855. The secnd entry shows PLESANT MILES VEALE marrying
RACHEL CHAPMAN on the same date. The October 1860 Probate Court records of
Wills of Daviess Country, IN lists PLESANT MILES VEALE to be the husband of
RACHEL CHAPMAN.
Misc: The Memorandum from the Daviess Co., IN Clerk’s Office shows his date of birth of February 17, 1816, however, the 1850 Indiana Federal Census in the household of Daniel as being 16 years old, making the year of birth of 1834, which is more than likely correct.
Will: From the Abstract of Probate Records of Daviess Co., IN.
VEALE, PLESANT M., October 1860, John C. Stern, Administrator.
m. Rachel Chapman 11-20-1855
Widow: Rachel Chapman, no children listed.

Misc: At the death of William Alexander Veale on March 23, 1879, Margaret Anne Veale remarried JAMES PULLUM on September 18, 1881 but died on November 11, 1881, leaving the children orphans. Jane C. Thomas and her 2nd husband took in the grand children, as any good grandmother would do. However with Jane and William Thomas Jr. having children of their own the task was too great for them. The children were placed into The Soldier’s and Sailor’s Orphanage in Knightstown, IN. The pension was used for their care.Prior to William Alexander Veale’s death, the Old James Carr Veale Sr. Bible was in his hands. At Margaret’s death Jane took possession of this Bible. The one page that I do have is on the family of William A. Veale & Margaret A, Pierce family. The one page came from Mr. Don DuBois of Portland, Oregon; a Thomas descendant.

Current resident has no knowkedge of Mrs. Lehew’s whereabouts. In this letter Mrs. Lehew relates thatJames Carr Veale Sr. to be her g-grandfather, and Daniel Coleman Veale to be her grandfather. It should have been, James Carr Veale Sr. her g-ggrandfather, Daniel Veale, her g- grandfather and Daniel Coleman Veale her grandfather. She further stated that John & William Veale came fromLoudoun Co., VA to Kentucky around 1810. William is supposed to have gone to Missouri after 1840. William’s daughter, Fanny m. James Beasley and believes that she took William to Missouri with them. NOTE: These John & William are referred to as nephews to John Veale, theson of William Veale Sr. who married Lydia Turley. Being listed as nephews would make them the son of Thomas Veale who married ElizabethEllzey. John the uncle was in Fayette Co., KY and had a large family. My father, Charles C. Veale noted: Daniel Veale, head of household, 1850 Indiana Federal Census in Barr Township had the following children: JANESTAIN VEALE, aged 2; WINGATE VEALE, aged 16; And ALSEY VEALE, aged 20. The 1850 Census does not bear this out, perhaps a later Census will.
In a letter from Patricia A. Spencer to Carl W. Veale Sr., she submitted the following:
1880 DAVIESS COUNTY, MISSOURI, MARION TOWNSHIP CENSUS:

COUNTY LOSES ANOTHER OF ITS OLDEST CITIZENS. Mrs. Susan Veale, 89, spent all of her useful life in this county of her birth. One ofVeale Townships oldest and respected residents was removed yesterday when Mrs. Susan Dickerson Veale passed away at her old family home at the age of eighty-nine years. Death came at 4:30 o’clock. Infirmities of old age caused her death. She had been living in the old family home ever since her marriage, nearly sixty tears ago. Always willing to lend a helping hand to one in need and ready to greet you with a smile or a word of cheer, she made numerous friends during her long residence in this county. Her neighbors knew her as a generous and kind woman and all that met her were impressed by her pleasing personality. Many there are who will regret to hear of her death. Susan Dickerson was born in Barr Township, August 20, 1835, the daughter of Zadock and Elizabeth Dickerson, pioneer residence of this county. All her life had been spent
here. Nearly sixty years ago she was married to William Thomas Veale, who predeceased her in death. To this union several children were born three of who are now living. The children are Ella and Zed Veale who lived at the family home with their mother and Mrs. S. G. Wilson of Memphis, Tennessee. Two grandchildren, Miss Susan Wilson of Memphis and Mrs. C. M. He was on a vessel loaded with cotton, bound from New Orleans to Pensacola, Florida, where they encountered a severe storm in the Gulf of Mexico, when the vessel took fire and burned to the water’s edge, and all aboard were lost".
Source #2: Due to confusement in the records, John’s middle name may have been MILES. In the Memorandum from the Daviess Co., IN Clerks Office on the families of James Carr Veale Jr. & Elinor Aikman, shows a MILES L. VEALE, born February 27, 1816 in Daviess County, IN. The Marriage Records of Daviess Co., IN shows a MILES L. VEALE and a PLESANT MILES VEALE both marrying a RACHEL CHAPMAN on the same date, November 21, 1855. The 1850 Indiana Federal Census shows a PLESANT MILES VEALE in the household of Daniel Veale & Mary Coleman with the same year of birth. The will of PLESANT MILES VEALE confirms the marriage and the date of marriage to RACHEL CHAPMAN. Therefore, John M. Veale is the son of James Jr. & Elinor. The February 27, 1816 is the date of birth of PLESANT MILES VEALE.

"MRS. ANDERSON VEALE DEAD"
"The passing of An Excellent Citizen at the Age of Sixth three years."
At ten minutes past 10 o’clock Monday night, Mrs. Mary Jane Veale, the wife of Anderson Veale, died in her home south of this city. She was sixty-three years old. Mrs. Veale was sick for five weeks, the main trouble being heart problems. She suffered terribly. Death, however, was seemly without pain. She passed away quietly and peacefully.
Mrs. Veale was born on the Allen farm 10 miles south of this city in May 1835, being the daughter of the late Moses Allen.
Mrs. Veale lived in Daviess County all her life. She was one of the oldest native born residents of this county. In December 1856, she was married to Anderson Veale, who survives her. To their union four living children: James, John, Lydia and Dessie. Mrs. Veale was an estimable lady. Her traits of character made scores of close friends. Mary was universally liked by all of those who knew her. She was an ardent member of the Presbyterian Church having untied with that church when she was quite a young woman.

She untied with the Presbyterian Church of this city March 29, 1882, and has always been true in all of her church relations and her life was worthy of the emulation of her neighbors and friends, but her character stood out pre-eminent in her home life. The theory speculates that three brother’s settler in the early era in the Colonies. If true, and it’s still possible. The brother’s may have been, due to the age range: Samuel of Bristol, Mass., William of Essex Co., VA, and Maurice/Morris of Westmoreland Co., VA. The indication is that they are all three born around the middle 1600’s. (RLV)

More about EMILY VEALE:
From the records of Lucille Bernice Hewitt (Veale), Lucille wrote, Emily and Benjamin moved to Chico, CA, and when Emily was 83 years old when the history was written. I’ve been unable to locate this history, yet. It was written in 1915. In another writing Mrs. Hewitt wrote; Emily Veale and Benjamin J. Helpenstine were married on December 17, 1851 (?) 71 maybe. They had two children: WILLIAM VEALE HELPENSTINE and MABEL HELPENSTINE.
On July 12, 1944, Mr. Zed Veale Jr., of Flagstaff, AZ received a letter from Mrs. John M. Waste, her husband being Dr. John M. Waste. Mrs. Waste related that she was doing research through the California DAR on the Veale Family as she is a descendant of Emily Veale. Her address at that time was: 1015 Montery Road, Glendale, 6, CA. Mrs. Waste further related that she had visited or contacted Mrs. Lucille Bernice Hewitt (Veale), but from her letter that she, Lucille nor the California DAR had little true family information.
Land transactions: Deeds from Daviess County Recorders Office, dated March 3, 1853 shows that Watis Veale sold to Benjamin Helpenstine 119 acres, part of NE quarter of Section 20, Township 2, Range 7. Watis, the son of James Carr Veale Sr would have been dead by this date.

More about JAMES CARR VEALE:
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Washington, IN, Section I.
Misc: From Representative Men of Indiana, page 37: JAMES CARR VEALE, farmer, of Washington, Indiana was born in Daviess County, December 25, 1828, and is a son of John T. and Lucinda (Hyatt) Veale. His father was a farmer, and his grandfather was the third white settler in Daviess County, having emigrated from South Carolina and settling here as early as 1807. He attended common schools during the winter months, and through the summer season assisted his father on the farm, remaining home until he was twenty-two years of age. He then was employed on the Wabash and Erie Canal at ninety cents per day. After working a year he returned and drove a team for John Hyatt to Louisville, and soon after he was appointed his clerk. In less than a year he was taken in as a partner, under the name of Hyatt & Veale, in keeping a store, pork-packing, boating, grain dealing, and general trading through Southern Indiana and the South. The firm dissolved in 1861, Mr. Veale forming
a partnership with James C. Spink, under the name of Spink & Veale. They purchased the Washington Mills, and soon after built the woolen mills. They also built and operated a large foundry, opened a bank of deposit, and added their business a large general store. During this time Mr. Veale was extensively engaged in farming and stock-raising, having been the first importer of blooded stock in this county. Today he has the finest stock in this portion of the state. Mr. Veale’s credit during his mercantile was unlimited among the merchants of New Orleans, Memphis, and other Southern cities, and the utmost reliance was placed upon his business integrity by all classes of people whom he came in contact. In 1875, owing to the floods of that summer, in which they lost sixty thousand dollars worth of stock and grain, be became embarrassed and suffered many reverses; but, with an amount of energy and industry truly remarkable, he engaged in farming, and expects to retrieve his shattered fortunes. The coming season he will plant over eight hundred acres of Corn, besides being extensively engaged in raising blooded
stock. He was married, November 22, 1858 to Nancy Wilkens, daughter of a merchant of Washington, Indiana. November 18, 1868 he married his present wife, Mary E. Ragsdale, a wealthy farmer’s daughter. They have three children. In political matters he sympathizes with the Greenback party. Mr. Veale has been closely identified with the growth and prosperity of Daviess County, having done as much as any other mans in developing many of the various institutions. He is a gentleman and a useful citizen.

"John Coleman also wrote me that John Veale was out in this country and that he had seen him at Indiana Creek". Mr. Thompson delivers supplies from the store to the miners at their "digins".
My comments: I believe that this is the John who went to California around 1849 during the Gold Rush days. He would have been the right age to having gone to California and the old folklore and hit it big to return to Indiana placing his funds into the Citizens Investment Bank operated by his brother James Carr Veale.
