Misc: Luther and Lora were twins, the legal records does not specify at to which was born first, but was signed and recorded by their grandmother, Jane C. Thomas, and amid wife. Luther went west around 1901 with John E. Thomas Sr. & Jr., son and grandson of Jane C. Thomas. Here he met Samuel Colt, the famous gun maker, and purchased a pair of Colt 45’s, serial numbers #7 & #8 and a case. These guns were used in the making of the movie "Colt 45". Uncle Luther made two trips back to Indiana in the 1940’s and spent two summers with our family. I grew to know and like him quite well. (RLV)

Military service: Served in the Spanish-American War.
Occupation: Owner and Editor of the Lexington Gazette Newspaper with over 300,000 circulation.

Misc: Leander’s early life was rather rough, his father, William A. Veale died on March 23, 1879 from wounds of the Civil War, his mother, Margaret Anne Pierce died on November 11, 1881. The entire family were taken in by Jane C. Thomas, their grandmother and her second husband William Thomas Jr. Jane and William now had children of their own and were forced to have the children placed into the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Home in Knightstown, IN. The Civil War Pensions of William A., and his wife, Margaret was used to fund the orphanage stay. At his majority, Luther was awarded $3200.00, the remainder of the pension trust fund that had been established.

Misc: Maye was a school- teacher in the states of Illinois and Kentucky prior to her marriage to Luther in 1908. Aunt Maye was active in the Local and State as President of the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs. And also active in the International King’s Daughter’s and Son’s, serving as its President for six years, established 2 King’s Daughters Aged Rest Homes, and served as editor of the Circle News for many years, plus many other Women’s activities.
Luther and Maye never had any children of their own, but raised two Court assigned but not adopted girls
It was their application for marriage that established the true middle name of William ALEXANDER Veale.

Misc.: He was a lifetime farmer on his father’s farm. And was a very active member of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). The maternal grand parents of Zadock D. were Zadock & Elizabeth (Cole) Dickerson, the former were natives of Maryland. Mrs. Veale’s maternal great-grandparents moved to Kentucky where Serat Dickerson died. His Widow, with her son, Zadock, came to Daviess County, IN Elizabeth Cole was her daughter and of James Cole, of KY, who came to Indiana, after settling here died in Daviess County, IN.

My personal notes: It was Zed Sr. who endorsed me for entry into the International Order of Odd Fellows and initiated some of the more advanced degrees, plus provided me the letter to gain the last and highest degree of the Odd Fellows while in England. Zed and I had a number of discussions on the family tree connections, but it was my father who was doing the family studies. Just wish I’d paid more attention. (RLV)
